About Nan

Little bit about myself . . . I am a homegrown artist with a particular interest in shape and design who has developed a fascination for the process of wrapping a 2 dimensional design around an asymetrical surface.

I am self-taught. Learning from books, from my sister who took a class, and from scouring the internet for designs and information.

My expedition into the land of egg art eventually led into an interest in Eggshell Jewelry (as egg art naturally rolls in different directions). With the help of Jane Pollak's wonderfully comprehensive book Decorating Eggs: Exquisite Designs with Wax & Dye, where she explains the process of making eggshell jewelry using domestic goose eggshells. Through many months of trial and error, I finally settled on a technique using ostrich eggshells. I love working with the ostrich egg for it's durability and it's gently pebbled surface.

I have been ‘doing eggs’ for over 20 years with a brief interlude while my children were young – but for the most part, have never stopped.

I work from my home studio up in the beautiful Sacramento Mountains adjacent to the Lincoln National Forest in New Mexico, USA. We are at an elevation of 7000ft, and from my window, I have blue skies and Ponderosa pines. And birds, and chipmunks, and deer, and wild turkeys and other various critters. I generally work on egg art during the spring and summer months to be ready for the Fall season. Along with decorated eggs, I also make Ostrich Eggshell Jewelry using the same batik method for creating the design.

My specialty is Ukrainian jewelry, but my design inspiration comes from many sources, including (but not limited to) quilt block patterns, traditional ethnic designs, pueblo pottery art, country and folk art and - of course - Mother Nature.

Shameless self promotion: My work has been featured in the Grand Galleria in Escondido, California along with a newspaper article showcasing my egg art. I was recently voted Artists Choice award by my fellow artists at the Labors Of Love Artists Showcase in Timberon NM. I occasionally offer a series of pieces for sale where the profit goes directly to a charity.
