Ostrich and Emu Egg Shell & Sterling Silver Earrings
Ostrich egg shell earrings are individually hand decorated with color on a piece of ostrich shell using a wax and dye process similar to batik.
Emu egg shell earrings are decorated by drawing the design with a wax pen, and then immersing the piece in white vinegar to etch off the bare parts of the shell. All color is natural, there is no dye.
The edges are shaped and smoothed by hand, and the fronts and backs are coated with a hard clear finish to protect the design and strenghten the shell. A sterling silver eyepin is embedded into the back of the shell, sometimes a bead is added, and the drop is attached to sterling silver earwires.
Each piece is signed on the back and the jewelry comes in a gift box.

Ostrich Egg Jewelry is fairly sturdy and will not break with regular handling. It can be rubbed with a soft cloth without scratching the surface.
Since each piece is handmade individually, there may be slight variations from the pictured piece. In most cases, I do have multiple quantities of each design.
