This is where my passion for hand decorated egg art began - with the Ukrainian Easter Eggs, also known as Pysanky. I enjoy the challenge of wrapping a two dimensional design over an oval surface and having it appear symetrical.

All eggs are standard size chicken eggs unless otherwise noted. They have all been emptied, and the insides are sterilized. The outside has been coated with a clear finish to strengthen the shell, add luster, and enhance the colors.

Each egg is created individually, so there may be slight variations from the pictured egg.

Prices include the egg with the stand, hanger or egg cup shown in the picture. You may contact me for an adjusted price if you would like to purchase the egg alone, or altered for hanging.

Each egg is signed by the artist (me), and comes in a gift box.

A bit about the UKRAINIAN EASTER EGG: The Ukrainian tradition of egg decorating dates back to pagan times, welcoming the advent of spring and celebrating birth and the cycle of life.

This art form eventually evolved into the present Ukrainian Easter Egg around 988 AD when it was incorporated into Christian Easter and Lent ceremonies.

The present day Ukrainian Easter Egg, or pysanka, remains a beautiful tradition of folk art handed down from mother to daughter. Each year before Easter, Ukrainian women stay up long into the night to create these wonderful little handfulls of art. Using a method similar to batik, the intricate egg design is drawn on with a beeswax pen called a "kistka" and dipped in multiple dye baths using progressively darker dyes until the final result emerges from the wax and the egg is displayed or given as a gift. Folklore attributes curative powers to these eggs, and they have come to symbolize spiritual rebirth for Ukrainian Christians.

The more ancient form of Ukrainian Eggs are represented by the Trypillian designs. These Trypillian eggs are a personal favorite with me. The dramatic browns and blacks combined with the flowing, meandering designs give it an earthy appeal.
