Ostrich egg shell necklaces are individually hand decorated on a piece of ostrich shell using a wax and dye process similar to batik. Emu egg shell necklaces are decorated using a vinegar-etch technique. There is no dye, only the natural green-grey layers of the shell.
The edges are shaped, lightly beveled, and smoothed by hand. The fronts and backs are coated with a hard clear finish to protect the design and strenghten the shell.
Each piece is signed on the back and comes in a gift box.

Eggshell Jewelry is fairly sturdy and will not break with regular handling. The ostrich shell is approximately 2mm in thickness. The emu egg shell is a little thinner (approximately 1mm), and lighter in weight. The concave backs are filled to add strength. Each shell piece is coated with a clear hard finish, and can be rubbed with a soft cloth without scratching the surface.
All eggshell jewelry is made from the discarded egg shells of North American domestic or "Common" farmed ostriches and emus. They are purchased locally in New Mexico and Arizona.
